How to do it

Set the bar on a Smith machine at shoulder height. Press the bar overhead until arms are extended, then lower it back down.

  1. 1Press the bar straight up using your shoulders and triceps
  2. 2Keep your core tight and maintain a neutral spine against the fixed path
  3. 3Lower the bar under control to just below chin level

Common mistakes

  • Don't lean back excessively or arch your lower back
  • Avoid pressing the bar behind your head, keep it slightly in front
  • Don't jerk the weight; keep the movement controlled
