How to do it
Kneel on one knee with the other foot planted in front, holding a dumbbell at shoulder height in the hand opposite the forward leg. Brace your trunk and press the dumbbell overhead in a smooth arc, then lower under control. This half-kneeling, contralateral setup forces your core to resist rotation.
- 1Front and side delt driving the press, triceps finishing it
- 2Core bracing hard to resist twisting toward the working arm
- 3Tall, stacked posture from the down knee through the head
Common mistakes
- Overarching the low back or flaring the ribs
- Letting the torso rotate or lean as you press
- Pressing the dumbbell out in front instead of straight up
Muscles worked
The dumbbell kneeling opposite shoulder press mainly works the front delts, triceps, and side delts, with the obliques, forearms, upper chest, upper traps, upper abs, lower abs, and glutes assisting.
