How to do it
Set the standing hip abductor machine so the pads rest against the outside of your working thigh. Stand squatted and hold the handles or frame for balance. Pull the legs in outward as far as you can, pause, then return with control. Keep your core tight and hips level throughout.
- 1Stand squatted and press your leg outward, feeling the outer thigh muscles and glutes engage
- 2Keep your core braced and hips square as you squeeze
- 3Return slowly to the start, maintaining tension on the abductors
Common mistakes
- Don't rotate your torso or shift your hips to cheat the movement
- Avoid swinging the leg or letting the stack slam at the end range
- Don't lock out the knee or push through pain in the hip or groin
