How to do it
Sit on the floor with your upper back against a bench and a loaded barbell over your hips. Plant your feet flat on the floor and drive through your heels to extend your hips until your body forms a straight line from shoulders to knees. Lower your hips under control and repeat.
- 1Drive through your hips and squeeze your glutes at the top; you should feel them powering the movement
- 2Push your hips back to hinge; you should feel a stretch and activation in your posterior chain
- 3Move deliberately and with control rather than relying on speed or momentum
Common mistakes
- Don't feel pain or strain in unrelated areas; adjust your load or range if you do
- Don't round your back or let the weight pull you forward; keep your core tight
- Don't use momentum or rush through the reps, quality trumps quantity
Muscles worked
The hip thrust with band mainly works the glutes, with the hamstrings, lower back, and quads assisting.
