How to do it

Stand tall holding a light dumbbell, raise your upper arm out to the side until your elbow is level with your shoulder and bent at 90 degrees. Keeping the elbow at shoulder height, rotate your forearm upward and back so your knuckles point toward the ceiling, then lower the forearm forward with control and repeat.

  1. 1Rear delt and rotator cuff working as the forearm rotates up and back
  2. 2Your elbow staying pinned at shoulder height the whole rep
  3. 3A slow, controlled rotation through a pain-free range

Common mistakes

  • Don't drop your elbow below shoulder height
  • Avoid using a weight so heavy you have to swing it up
  • Don't rush; external rotation should be slow and controlled
