How to do it
Sit on a bench holding a light dumbbell, elbow bent 90 degrees and pinned against your side with your forearm across your stomach. Keeping the elbow glued to your waist, rotate your forearm outward away from your body until you feel a squeeze in the back of your shoulder, then return under control. Switch arms after your set.
- 1The small muscles of your rotator cuff working to rotate the forearm out
- 2Your elbow staying pinned tight against your side throughout
- 3A controlled, pain-free arc out and back
Common mistakes
- Letting your elbow drift away from your side
- Using a weight so heavy you twist your torso to move it
- Rushing the reps instead of rotating slowly
