How to do it

Lie on your side with a light dumbbell in your top hand and that elbow bent 90 degrees, tucked against your ribs. Keeping the elbow pinned to your side, rotate your forearm up and away from your stomach until it points toward the ceiling, then lower under control. Finish your reps, then roll over to the other side.

  1. 1Feel the back of your shoulder and rotator cuff control the lift
  2. 2Keep your elbow glued to your ribs the whole time
  3. 3Move slowly through a comfortable, pain-free range

Common mistakes

  • Don't let your elbow drift off your side
  • Avoid using a heavy weight that makes you swing the arm
  • Don't roll your torso back to cheat the weight up
