How to do it
Hold a dumbbell in each hand and drop into a quarter-squat with knees soft and feet hip-width. Step sideways with one foot, then follow with the other, staying low and keeping constant tension through your hips as you travel laterally.
- 1Feel the outer hips and glutes work to drive each side step
- 2Stay low in the quarter-squat the whole time
- 3Keep your feet pointed forward and knees pushed out
Common mistakes
- Don't stand tall between steps; hold the squat depth
- Avoid letting your knees cave inward
- Don't drag your trailing foot; step with control
Muscles worked
The dumbbell lateral walk mainly works the glutes, with the quads, adductors, forearms, hamstrings, and calves assisting.
