How to do it
Lie chest-down on a decline bench holding a dumbbell in each hand, letting your arms hang straight toward the floor. Shrug your shoulder blades up and back to lift the dumbbells, squeezing your traps at the top, then lower under control. The decline angle targets your traps from a different line of pull than a standing shrug.
- 1Upper traps contracting as you lift your shoulders toward your ears
- 2Arms hanging relaxed so the traps do the work
- 3A brief squeeze at the top of each shrug
Common mistakes
- Rolling your shoulders; shrug straight up and down
- Bending your elbows or using momentum to swing the weight
- Jutting your head forward; keep your neck neutral
Muscles worked
The dumbbell decline shrug mainly works the upper traps, with the forearms and mid traps assisting.
