How to do it

Set up on a back extension bench and cradle a barbell in the crooks of your elbows held tight against your chest. Hinge forward at the hips with a flat back, then extend your spine and hips to bring your torso back up in line with your legs. Squeeze your glutes and lower back at the top, then lower under control.

  1. 1Your lower back and glutes driving the torso up
  2. 2The bar locked tight into your elbows against your chest
  3. 3A braced core and flat back throughout the hinge

Common mistakes

  • Do not hyperextend or snap the spine back at the top
  • Avoid rounding the upper back to chase the weight
  • Do not let the bar drift away from your chest
