How to do it
Hold a barbell with a shoulder-width underhand grip and hinge forward at the hips until your torso is near parallel to the floor, back flat. Pull the bar toward your lower ribs by driving your elbows back and squeezing your shoulder blades. Lower the bar under control until your arms are fully extended.
- 1Feel your lats and lower lats contract as you pull the bar to your waist
- 2Drive your elbows down and back, leading with your back not your arms
- 3Keep your core braced and spine neutral to hold a stable hinge
Common mistakes
- Avoid rounding your back; hinge at the hips and keep your chest set
- Don't shrug or jerk the bar up with momentum
- Don't stand up as you pull; keep your torso angle steady
