How to do it
Stand tall, then step one foot back into a slight lunge while swinging both arms up and out to the sides like a flapping motion. Return to center as you lower the arms, then alternate the stepping leg in a continuous rhythm. Keep your chest up and your core engaged throughout.
- 1Your glutes and quads loading as you step back
- 2Your shoulders and upper back driving the arm flap
- 3A smooth, coordinated rhythm between legs and arms
Common mistakes
- Letting your front knee collapse inward
- Swinging the arms so hard you lose posture
- Slouching or rounding the upper back
Muscles worked
The stepback flap mainly works the glutes, with the quads, upper traps, lower abs, hamstrings, calves, front delts, side delts, and hip flexors assisting.
