How to do it
Sit tall with one leg extended and the other foot planted for balance. Flex the ankle of the straight leg and gently pull your toes back with your hand, a towel, or a band until you feel a stretch through your calf. Hold, then switch sides.
- 1Feel the stretch travel from the sole of your foot up through your calf as you pull your toes toward you
- 2Keep your knee long and your chest lifted so the tension stays in the lower leg
- 3Breathe steadily and let the ankle gradually open rather than forcing it
Common mistakes
- Do not round your back or collapse your chest to reach your foot
- Avoid yanking your toes back or forcing the ankle into a painful range
- Do not lock the knee aggressively or let the leg roll inward or outward
