How to do it

Sit tall with one leg extended and the other foot planted for balance. Flex the ankle of the straight leg and gently pull your toes back toward you with your hand, a towel, or a band until you feel a stretch through your calf. Hold, then switch sides.

  1. 1The stretch traveling from the sole of your foot up through your calf
  2. 2Your knee staying long and your chest lifted so tension stays in the lower leg
  3. 3Steady breathing as the ankle gradually opens rather than forcing it

Common mistakes

  • Rounding your back or collapsing your chest to reach your foot
  • Yanking your toes back or forcing the ankle into a painful range
  • Locking the knee aggressively or letting the leg roll in or out
