How to do it

Sit on the floor with a foam roller under one calf and your hands behind you for support. Lift your hips and roll slowly from the back of the knee down to the ankle, pausing on any tight spots. Rotate the leg slightly in and out to cover the whole muscle, then switch legs.

  1. 1Feel the pressure release along the belly of the calf as you roll
  2. 2Pause and breathe on the tightest spots until they soften
  3. 3Keep the foot relaxed so the muscle can let go

Common mistakes

  • Do not roll directly over the back of the knee or the Achilles tendon
  • Avoid racing through the muscle; move slowly and deliberately
  • Do not hold your breath when you hit a tender spot
