How to do it
Sit in the abdominal crunch machine with your back against the pad and grip the handles or chest pad. Crunch your torso down by contracting your abs, bringing your ribs toward your pelvis, then return slowly against the resistance.
- 1Drive the crunch by shortening the gap between ribs and hips
- 2Squeeze your abs hard at the bottom of the rep
- 3Keep tension on the abs as you return rather than relaxing
Common mistakes
- Don't pull with your arms or hip flexors to move the weight
- Avoid jerking through the range; keep it smooth
- Don't hold your breath; exhale as you crunch
Muscles worked
The lever total abdominal crunch mainly works the upper abs and lower abs, with the obliques and hip flexors assisting.
