How to do it
Attach an ankle strap to a low cable. Stand sideways to the machine and strap the cuff to the ankle farthest from the stack. Hold onto the machine for balance. Keeping your torso upright, lift your strapped leg out to the side as high as possible without tilting your hips. Pause briefly, then slowly bring your leg back to the starting position under control. Complete the reps and then switch legs.
- 1Feel your outer glutes and hip abductors working as you pull the cable away from your body
- 2Keep your torso tall and core engaged to stabilize
- 3Control the movement both out and back to feel the burn
Common mistakes
- Avoid swinging your leg or using momentum; move deliberately
- Don't lean your torso to the side; stay upright
- Avoid rotating your foot or hip; keep toes pointing forward
Muscles worked
The cable hip abduction mainly works the glutes, quads, and hamstrings, with the lower back and calves assisting.
