How to do it

Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart. Push your hips back and bend your knees to lower until your thighs are at least parallel to the ground, keeping your chest up. Drive through your heels to return to standing.

  1. 1Sit back into your hips and load your hamstrings and glutes so you feel tension building at the bottom
  2. 2Drive up explosively through your mid-foot and heel, feeling your hips and quads power the ascent
  3. 3Keep your core braced and torso upright, you should feel stable even as you move quickly

Common mistakes

  • Don't bounce uncontrollably at the bottom or let your knees collapse inward
  • Avoid rounding your back or leaning excessively forward in an effort to move faster
  • Don't let your heels lift off the ground or twist your knees under load

Muscles worked

The dynamic effort squat mainly works the quads and glutes, with the hamstrings, lower back, and calves assisting.
