How to do it

Lie on your side with your legs stacked and hold a light dumbbell against your top shoulder. Brace your obliques and crunch your torso and legs toward each other, lifting into a side V, then lower under control. Finish your reps and switch sides.

  1. 1The obliques on the down side squeezing to fold you up
  2. 2Legs and torso rising toward each other together
  3. 3A controlled lower rather than dropping back flat

Common mistakes

  • Rolling onto your back to cheat the lift
  • Yanking with the neck or arm instead of the waist
  • Using a dumbbell so heavy your form breaks down
