How to do it
Lie back on a decline bench with your feet anchored at the top and hold a dumbbell with both hands extended overhead. Keeping your arms straight, sit up by contracting your abs until your torso is upright, then lower back down under control with the weight staying overhead.
- 1Abs working hard against the long lever of the overhead weight
- 2A controlled curl of the spine as you rise and lower
- 3Arms locked straight so the load stays over your head
Common mistakes
- Do not let the weight pull your arms forward or down
- Avoid yanking up with momentum, move from the abs
- Do not arch your lower back off the bench at the bottom
Muscles worked
The dumbbell decline overhead sit-up mainly works the upper abs and lower abs, with the obliques, front delts, and hip flexors assisting.
