How to do it

Lie on a decline bench with your feet secured, holding a dumbbell in each hand at the sides of your lower chest. Press the dumbbells up and slightly together until your arms are extended, then lower them under control to feel the stretch in your lower chest. Keep your shoulder blades retracted against the bench throughout.

  1. 1Lower chest and triceps engaging as you press the dumbbells up
  2. 2Feet secured and shoulder blades retracted for a stable base
  3. 3Strong contraction across the lower pecs as the weights meet at the top

Common mistakes

  • Flaring your elbows excessively or dropping the weights fast
  • Lifting your hips off the bench or arching your back excessively
  • Letting your wrists bend backward; keep them stacked over your elbows
