How to do it
Move into the stretch position slowly until you feel a gentle pull on the target muscle. Hold the stretch while breathing deeply, avoiding any bouncing or pain.
- 1Place the ball of your foot against a wall and lean forward until you feel a stretch along your calf and Achilles tendon
- 2Keep your knee straight for a gastrocnemius stretch or slightly bent for more soleus emphasis
- 3Hold the position and breathe; you should feel the tension gradually release
Common mistakes
- Don't bounce or force your heel toward the wall; ease into the stretch
- Avoid twisting your knee or foot; maintain alignment
- Don't hinge from your lower back; the movement should come from your ankle
