How to do it
Rest a light barbell across your upper back with feet about shoulder-width apart. Dip into a quarter to half squat, then explode upward so your feet leave the ground. Land softly with bent knees and absorb the impact before the next rep.
- 1Quads and glutes firing explosively as you leave the ground
- 2A soft, controlled landing through the mid-foot
- 3Full hip extension at the top of the jump
Common mistakes
- Landing with stiff, locked-out knees
- Letting your knees collapse inward on landing
- Using too heavy a load that kills your jump height
Muscles worked
The barbell jump squat mainly works the quads and glutes, with the hamstrings, calves, and lower back assisting.
