How to do it

Set a cable to its lowest position and attach a single handle. Stand sideways to the machine and hold the handle with the hand farthest from the stack, arm extended down by your side. Place your other hand on your hip. Without bending forward or backward, lean away from the machine by lowering your hand toward the floor, feeling a stretch in your opposite oblique. Use your obliques to pull your torso back to the upright position. Repeat for reps and then switch sides.

  1. 1Feel your obliques engaging as you bend sideways against cable resistance
  2. 2Keep your hips square and your spine tall
  3. 3Focus on squeezing your side at the peak contraction

Common mistakes

  • Avoid rotating your torso or leaning forward
  • Don't bend backward; only to the side
  • Avoid using momentum; move slowly
