How to do it
Kneel on all fours or in a tall kneeling position and place one hand behind your head. Rotate your elbow down and across toward the opposite side, then open up by rotating it up toward the ceiling, following the movement with your eyes. Repeat, then switch sides.
- 1A gentle stretch and rotation through your mid-back
- 2Your hips staying square and still as your spine turns
- 3Your core controlling the rotation rather than momentum
Common mistakes
- Letting your lower back arch or your hips twist
- Forcing the rotation past a comfortable range
- Rushing the movement instead of moving smoothly
Muscles worked
The kneeling back rotation mainly works the obliques, with the lower back, mid traps, upper abs, and lower abs assisting.
