How to do it

Lie back on a flat bench and grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder width. Keep your glutes planted on the bench and your feet flat on the floor as you lower the bar to your mid-chest, then press it back up. Do not let your hips lift off the bench during the press.

  1. 1Feel your chest stretch at the bottom and drive on the press
  2. 2Keep your glutes and shoulders pinned to the bench
  3. 3Push your feet into the floor for a stable base

Common mistakes

  • Don't arch and lift your butt off the bench to push the weight
  • Avoid flaring your elbows straight out to the sides
  • Don't bounce the bar off your chest
