How to do it

Set up a box or bench behind you. Perform a barbell back squat, sitting back onto the box briefly before driving up to standing position. This helps improve squat depth and power.

  1. 1Feel your glutes and hamstrings engage as you sit back to the box
  2. 2Keep your core braced and chest proud to control the descent
  3. 3Drive through your heels and explode up after lightly touching the box

Common mistakes

  • Avoid plopping down or bouncing off the box; use it as a depth guide
  • Don't let your knees drift forward; sit back with hips
  • Avoid losing tension at the bottom; stay engaged

Muscles worked

The box squat mainly works the quads and glutes, with the hamstrings, lower back, and calves assisting.
