How to do it
Stand on a resistance band with both feet and hold the ends at your shoulders, a box or bench in front of you. Place one foot on the platform and drive through that heel to stand up on top against the band's resistance. Step down under control and repeat on the other leg.
- 1Your lead-leg glute and quad driving you up onto the box
- 2An upright torso and braced core keeping you balanced
- 3A controlled descent so the working leg loads on the way down too
Common mistakes
- Pushing off hard with the trailing leg or hopping up
- Letting your knee cave inward or shoot past your toes
- Leaning forward or arching your back
Muscles worked
The band step-up mainly works the quads and glutes, with the hamstrings and calves assisting.
